Symbiosis

Riccardo Buonafede

Symbiosis is a visual reflection on the deep, ancestral bond between humans and nature — now frayed by speed, technology, and disconnection. At the center of the mural floats a veiled female figure, moving in harmony with a Pelagia Noctiluca jellyfish. In this surreal gesture of imitation, the work evokes a time when humans lived attuned to the rhythms of the sea, reading winds and stars, dancing with the seasons. The image is inspired by stories from local sailors and the artist’s own
experience diving in Gozo, where he encountered jellyfish up close — feeling both their elegance and their sting. The Pelagia, delicate yet resilient, becomes a symbol of lost harmony — one that may still be recovered through slowness, observation, and empathy. The mural also echoes fragments of ancient seafaring spirituality still alive in Gozo, where boats bear painted eyes believed to guide and protect. As if the sea — and what sails upon it — still carries memory. Symbiosis invites viewers to rediscover a natural rhythm, rooted in presence rather than speed — a rhythm that breathes, observes, and connects.
