Through the Current

TIMAEUS

Once scarred by piracy and plunder, the island of Alonissos now hides its treasures beneath the sea. Through the Current is a poetic 3D animation that blends myth, memory, and marine ecology. At its heart is a pirate folk song, sung by Magdalini Pappos—one of the island’s elders—passed down from her brother and recounting the story of a historical pirate invasion. This voice of the past merges with vibrant underwater imagery: a visual narrative of healing, where red coral, sea grass, sponges, and monk seals now thrive within Europe’s largest Marine Protected Area. The film contrasts extraction and renewal, loss and recovery—inviting us to reflect on what has been taken, and what the ocean can return if left undisturbed. It is a dreamlike meditation on transformation, resilience, and the sea’s enduring mystery.
