Two Waves

Matlakas

Two Waves is a circular mosaic that explores the fragile balance between the ocean and human activity. Shaped as a perfect circle—a symbol of harmony and cyclicality—it draws inspiration from the Taoist Taijitu, the yin-yang symbol, to portray two interconnected yet opposing worlds. Three-quarters of the composition celebrate the ocean’s resilience and biodiversity: a vibrant, colorful expanse filled with real and imaginary marine creatures, some tangled in plastic and abandoned nets—a reminder of the sea’s beauty and its vulnerability. The final quarter is starker and darker, depicting the impact of industrialization: smoking factories, waste, and debris. A lone bee and bird appear—perhaps the last of their kind—silent witnesses to a collapsing ecosystem. At the boundary between these two worlds, a chromatic bridge emerges: a small but powerful symbol of hope, suggesting that coexistence and renewal are possible. Every shape in the mosaic is edged with a 1 cm black line, a distinctive element of the artist’s visual language. The work was handcrafted using recycled materials and industrial ceramics, aligning with the principles of sustainability and transformation.
