Art4Sea Endorsed as an Official UNESCO Ocean Decade Activity!
We are proud to share that Art4Sea has been officially endorsed as a Decade Activity by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).
The endorsement, under the title “Art4Sea: Inspiring Ocean Awareness Through Art,” covers all activities scheduled to continue until January 31, 2026.
This recognition highlights the shared commitment of our consortium and participating artists to promote ocean literacy, advance sustainability, and foster cross-cultural dialogue through the transformative power of contemporary art.
Art4Sea also seeks to encourage people to restore and rethink their relationship with the ocean, by inspiring a deeper emotional and cultural connection to the marine environment.
As an Ocean Decade Activity, Art4Sea contributes to the global mission to achieve “The Science We Need for the Ocean We Want” by:
- Fostering ocean literacy and inclusive education across communities;
- Connecting scientific knowledge with artistic practice to raise awareness of the ocean’s vital role;
- Encouraging intergenerational knowledge-sharing through community and youth involvement;
- Supporting a creative and resilient relationship with the ocean through cultural engagement and collaboration.
We are honoured to be part of this global movement that places the ocean at the core of scientific, cultural, and societal innovation.

The endorsement comes at a pivotal moment, as Art4Sea prepares to open its exhibitions on the three Mediterranean islands involved in the project — presenting both physical artworks and their digital counterparts. Alongside these openings, a dedicated virtual exhibition platform will host 12 digital artworks and the digitally rendered versions of the 12 physical pieces, offering an immersive experience accessible from each location.
The exhibition journey will begin in Gozo (Malta) in the first week of June, followed by Alonissos (Greece) in the last week of June. In early July, Vlora (Albania) will host the official launch of the virtual exhibition, during a public event at the city’s VIsion Multimedia Center. Finally, in mid-September, the exhibition will arrive in Ustica (Italy), where visitors will not only be able to explore the artworks and the virtual platform through the island’s Digital Corner, but also attend the Art4Sea Grand Event — a vibrant celebration featuring live performances, screenings, and activities involving the local community.
And that’s not all — the journey continues in autumn, with a series of educational outreach initiatives specifically designed for younger generations, to help strengthen awareness and rebuild our connection with the ocean.
